SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Plans and performs online editing (finishing) for current projects from various NFB studios in a range of formats, such as original digital footage, archival footage in the form of digital files or video tapes, film stock, photographs, visual effects, etc. Performs colour grading and correction, packaging (inserting titles, credits, IDs and subtitles) and corrects defects to fine-tune images. Participates in pre-production meetings; informs clients about the standards, procedures and steps required to create a final product that meets their needs; determines and negotiates the range of work that needs to be done.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensures that the final project matches the offline-edited project by comparing it with the visual reference they received.
Watches the project with the project’s creator, takes note of their requests, assesses and discusses these with them; discusses their technical and creative choices, suggests specific effects and new processing approaches that might enhance the final product.
Suggests avenues or courses of action for more complex scenes or to avoid potential problems and ensures that the product aligns with industry standards.
Applies appropriate LUTs for the footage received; adjusts based on the style that’s desired.
Performs colour grading and correction to standardize the image according to the instructions of the creator or the director of photography.
Works in different colour spaces (Rec. 709, P3, BT.2020) and performs colour grading in either standard or ACES workflow.
Applies specific effects to correct obvious problems in the edit (e.g., image stabilization, removal of mics or camera reflections, etc.); rotoscoping may be required.
Handles some complex or experimental projects, and when applicable, enlists the help of colleagues to find solutions.
Works with the infographics team to distribute work to be done.
Uses artificial intelligence or other tools to improve the final product (e.g., uprez conversion, compression issues, etc.).
Performs image compositing if editing requires it.
Inserts titles, credits, IDs and subtitles; may be required to adjust subtitles once final sound mix is complete.
Once approval is granted, generates the initial master in the formats defined by the NFB; may be required to generate other files for various production collaborators.
Writes quarterly reports identifying problems encountered and escalates any major issues relating to workflows or installations to the person responsible for these.
Explains the standard production steps that generate the desired product to production leads (producers, directors, sales agents) and justifies any changes made to a project.
Advises clients on how to reduce both costs and delays by preparing their material and editing project according to standards; informs clients of the budgetary, creative and technical consequences of their choices.
Ensures that external suppliers are aware of and comply with the NFB’s production and quality standards.
Takes part in other activities related to editing to improve the operation of editing rooms.
Ensures that editing equipment is maintained and operating properly so that editing sessions run effectively and efficiently and produce high-quality results; escalate issues and opportunities to the person responsible for these.
As required by their reporting manager, participates in meetings, and makes suggestions regarding equipment purchases, technology changes, standardization, updating and improving service standards, procedures, and processes.
Contributes to the development of new or improved technologies that enhance the final edited product.
Participates in testing new software, equipment, and processes.
Keeps own skills up to date by reading specialized journals, doing Internet research, attending lectures, conferences, seminars, special courses or trade fairs to stay abreast of the latest technology.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
College diploma in a relevant discipline, such as electronics or media arts and technology;
Minimum of eight (8) years technical experience in video post-production or equivalent combination of education and experience;
Proven experience in using online editing equipment in different formats, including HD and 4K, such as DaVinci Resolve, Media Composer, and Adobe Premiere Pro, as well as analog and digital recording and duplication equipment, etc.;
Excellent knowledge of the color space;
Excellent knowledge of video methods that can be used to control quality while adhering to television standards;
Familiarity with film and television industry techniques and equipment used in filming, dubbing, mixing and editing, and familiarity with audio and video recording standards;
Experience in compositing and the use of the Adobe suite is an asset;
Bilingual in the official languages (French and English), both orally and in writing.
